The film tells the story of a theoretical physicist named J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the manager of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project and his contributions that led to the creation of the atomic bomb.

Oppenheimer later served as chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, where he worked to slow the development of a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.

In 1954, Oppenheimer was branded a communist due to his affiliations with various groups. He was exempt from federal government service and will continue his contributions to science as a teacher and innovative theoretical physicist during his exile.

He received three Nobel nominations for physics between 1946 and 1967, although he had never won one before his death in 1967.
