Oppenheimer’s length barely fits on an IMAX movie projector

In movies oppenheimerNolan really pushed his limits, with a reel of film weighing 600 pounds or 272 kilograms and a length of 11 miles or 17.7 kilometers.

oppenheimer It comes out next week, and director Christopher Nolan is used to pushing the boundaries of cinema and discovering new boundaries for cinema. But the auteur of the hit film was barely able to show Oppenheimer’s latest film, after realizing it was taking so long it barely fit into an IMAX projector.

IMAX movie projectors have what is known as a platter, which is a mechanism used in projectors to support and unwind reels of large-format film during projection. It consists of a circular plate that holds the film reel securely and rotates it while the film is projected on a screen.

Film decks are an essential component of an IMAX projection system, as they ensure continuous and uninterrupted smooth playback of movies and enable an immersive and seamless viewing experience.

However, if anyone has ever seen the size of a few reels of film, they know that it can almost seem quite precarious if the film runs for a long time. In the case of oppenheimerNolan really pushed his limits, with a reel of film weighing 600 pounds or 272 kilograms and a length of 11 miles or 17.7 kilometers.

After collaborating with Kodak to create a new camera capable of shooting monochrome in black and white, the director found he had too much on his plate – literally.

When Nolan was interviewed for Oppenheimer, and Cineverse quotes Collider, Nolan was asked if the length of a movie is actually determined by how long you can physically shoot before the movie is too long. Nolan responded that he had previously discussed with IMAX about his other films, which involved extending the plate over the previous 150-minute limit to 167 minutes for Interstellar.

With oppenheimer, the sheer weight of the film now means that the projector has reached its absolute limit for shooting film on film, as the arms can no longer support the weight. Nolan explains that,

“There is a connection, but no. The dictation goes backwards. Which we’ve been doing with the plates for years, because when I started working on an IMAX movie, it was two and a half hours, that’s it.
And then we come to Interstellar, which rises to 2 hours 47 minutes; what they’ve been able to do for me is design the disc a bit wider, so it has an extra edge, and it gets a bit wider over the years.”

He went on to say:

“Then I went up to them and said, ‘Okay, I have a 180-page script. That’s a three hour movie on the nose. Can it be done?” We saw it, they saw the dish and came to the conclusion that it could be done. [tertawa]
I am told that this is an absolute limit because now the arm holding the record is facing directly there. So I think this is finally the frontier of the runtime to be made in an IMAX film format.”

Apart from Cillian Murphy, who plays the role of openhaimerThe rest of the cast of the film is starred by Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Benny Safdie, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Matthew Modine, Kenneth Branagh, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano and Alden Ehrenreich.

oppenheimer It will be in theaters on July 21, and we look forward to seeing it next week in Indonesia.
