Uncharted 2: Among Thieves director Bruce Straley accused Mission Impossible 7 of copying several iconic scenes from his game, such as mimicking the scene where Nathan Drake hangs from a train (Uncharted: Among Thieves). Straley later took to Twitter and posted several images comparing Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt hanging from a carriage to an image of Nathan Drake doing the same in Uncharted. The director of Uncharted also gave a satirical caption, “sincere form of flattery”.
The former Naughty Dog employee has shown how similar the scenes from the movie Mission Impossible 7 and the scenes from the game Uncharted are. And interestingly, this isn’t the first time these two franchises have been linked together. Mission Impossible 5, 6 and 7 director Christopher McQuarrie previously said (via Eurogamer) that the Uncharted game was the inspiration for the Mission Impossible movies.
While promoting Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015, Christopher McQuarrie also called Uncharted 3 a “mecca” when the film featured an airplane scene featuring Tom Cruise dangling from the plane, which was the opening scene of the film. Uncharted 3 co-director Justin Richmond responded positively to the compliment by sending out a simple tweet. “you make me happy”, in response to McQuarrie’s compliment.
In the past, the people behind the Mission Impossible and Uncharted franchises have given each other credit, because each of these franchises served as inspiration for the others. But now that seems to have changed, and it’s heating up. While it’s unknown if Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie actually filmed the train scene in Uncharted 2’s Dead Reckoning Part 1, it’s hard to deny the similarities between the two.
The iconic train scene in Uncharted 2, also known as Uncharted: Among Thieves, became famous after the game’s release in 2009. So it’s only natural that the Mission Impossible 7 team adapted this scene for inclusion in the movie. Let’s just hope, geeks, whether Mission Impossible 7 or the official title Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 will be very successful or not.
