Observation Haki is a type of Haki introduced in the One Piece story other than Armament Haki or Conqueror’s Haki. There are several powerful abilities that users can perform with this type of Haki.
By using Observation Haki, the user can see what ordinary people cannot, such as predicting attacks, feeling other people’s emotions, etc. However, the most notable thing about Observation Haki is being able to see the future. In the One Piece story, Katakuri is the first character who can see the future using Observation Haki. He displayed this ability in his fight against Luffy in the Whole Cake Island arc. With this ability, Katakuri can tell what Luffy’s next move will be and not just predict it. Katakuri is able to see the future for a few seconds.
Katakuri uses this extraordinary ability in every battle, making him a figure who has never lost once. On the other hand, this also overwhelmed Luffy early on in the fight. Luffy himself was surprised as all the attacks he was about to do never managed to hit Katakuri.
Monkey D Luffy
Luffy is the next character who can see the future in One Piece. In his fight against Katakuri, Luffy really had to exert all of his abilities. After repeatedly failing to launch attacks, Luffy begins to realize Katakuri’s abilities. And in the middle of the fight, he was finally able to awaken his powers.
Like Katakuri, Luffy can also see the future for a few seconds which he uses to block all of his attacks. And after a long and fierce battle, Luffy finally managed to win this fight after Katakuri admitted defeat. In the Wano arc, Luffy once again used this ability while he was in Udon Prison.
Sanji
Blackleg Sanji is the head chef of the Straw Hat pirate group and is the third most powerful crew, after Luffy and Zoro. According to Eiichiro Oda, in an SBS column, it was stated that Sanji specializes in Observation. That is to say, Sanji is the most trained character in the use of this type of Haki and has demonstrated his abilities several times.
What’s interesting is that there’s actually no technical confirmation that Sanji has the ability to see the future. However, one of the moments in the Whole Cake Island arc seems to hint at this matter. This moment shows how Sanji was able to avoid Katakuri’s attack aimed at him as if he knew the attack would appear.
Kindred
Shanks is the most recent example of a character who can see the future in One Piece. Shanks is one of the four ocean lords aka Yonko and is one of the strongest pirates, though he doesn’t have any devil fruit abilities. Shanks really trusted his extraordinary Haki abilities. That’s why it’s only natural that Shanks could master all three Haki at once.
In the previous chapter, we saw how Shanks was able to subdue an admiral even from a very far distance with his Conqueror’s Haki. And although previously it was only speculation by fans, in the end the speculation was proven when Shanks was able to see into the future when he faced the Eustass Kid.
Having the ability to see the future is certainly not an arbitrary achievement for these characters. This ability is clear proof that they have tremendous power. And of course it will be interesting to see if there will be other characters who can see the future.
